Assumption Cathedral in Helsinki or Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Cathedral of the Diocese of Helsinki Finland Archdiocese. Was designed by the Russian architect Alexander M. Gornostaeva in pseudo-Byzantine style in 1868. Named in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Chapel of the cathedral was consecrated in honor of the great martyr Alexander Hotovitskogo, which until 1917 was the rector of the parish Helsingfors.
At the moment, the Assumption Cathedral is the largest Orthodox cathedral in Northern and Western Europe (at the time of construction, Finland was part of the Russian Empire). The total height of the building – 51 meters.
The cathedral is located in the heart of Helsinki at the base of the peninsula (aka – the urban area) Katajanokka (Fin. Katajanokka). The cathedral is located on a high cliff. On the platform at the entrance to the cathedral offers a wide view of the city
